Biological control of potato soft rot caused by Dickeya solani and the survival of bacterial antagonists under cold storage conditions

Dickeya and Pectobacterium are responsible for causing blackleg of plants and soft rot of tubers in storage and in the field, giving rise to losses in seed potato production. In an attempt to improve potato health, biocontrol activity of known and putative antagonists was screened using in vitro and in planta assays, followed by analysis of their persistence at various storage temperatures. Most antagonists had low survival on potato tuber surfaces at 4 °C. The spread of Streptococcus pneumoniae within families has been scarcely investigated so far. This feasibility study aimed to estimate the prevalence of pneumococcal carriage in school-aged children and co-habiting relatives and to explore the potential link between the family environment and the sharing of pneumococcal serotypes covered by the vaccine. Oropharyngeal samples of 146 subjects belonging to 36 different family groups were molecularly tested for pneumococcal detection and serotyping. Disentangling the rhizosphere effect on nitrate reducers and denitrifiers: insight into the role of root exudates.

Phenotypic and genotypic evaluation of slime production by conventional and molecular microbiological techniques.

Twenty-nine staphylococcal isolates from different clinical samples were tested for slime production: phenotypic characterization was carried out using Christensen test (tube test) and Congo red agar plate test (CRA plate test), while the presence and expression of icaA and icaD genes were evaluated by real-time PCR. Background Torquetenovirus (TTV) viremia is emerging as a promising tool to assess functional immune competence, to predict posttransplant immune-related complications, and eventually to customize immunosuppression. Methods In this study, 327 blood samples were tested using two real-time PCR (rtPCR) assays both targeted to the untranslated region of the TTV genome. The first assay was an in-house rtPCR developed by our group, the second one was the recently marketed TTV R-GENE assay. In humans, Fusarium spp. are the major cause of eye infections in patients wearing contact lenses or after local trauma. Preliminary evaluation of a zinc-copper-citric acid biocomplex for the control of Plenodomus tracheiphilus causal agent of citrus mal secco disease

In this study we evaluated a zinc copper-citric acid biocomplex (Dentamet®) for the effect on citrus mal secco disease caused by Plenodomus tracheiphilus. In vitro tests highlighted an inhibitory activity of the compound on mycelial growth and phialoconidia germination. Independent in vivo trials were performed in a growth chamber inoculating a virulent fungal isolate on sour orange seedlings and young plants of two lines of Femminello lemon, namely ‘Zagara bianca’ and ‘2Kr’, grafted on sour orange and grown in pots.
